Generally speaking, yes — at least for most travelers coming to Europe from outside of the Schengen Zone (and/or the European Union).
The reason being that — while the Schengen Zone itself has for the most part abolished internal border checks — most visitors from outside of the Schengen need to have a valid Schengen Visa to enter any of its member state's many borders.
And in order to both apply for and be granted a Schengen Visa — having the proper Schengen Travel Insurance is a mandatory requirement.
PRO-TIP: However, even if you're coming to Europe from a country that doesn't require a visa (i.e., one that has signed a visa-waiver agreement with the Schengen and/or the EU), having Schengen Travel Insurance is still highly recommended. Because traveling abroad usually comes with plenty of surprises — so it's best to be as prepared as possible (and in good hands) in case something does go wrong.
Which countries are covered by Schengen Travel Insurance
That obviously depends on the individual provider. However, we here at AXA not only meet all the requirements for being granted a Schengen visa, but we also provide coverage across a broad range of European territories*, including:
all Schengen Area countries;
all European Union (EU) countries (including non-Schengen EU countries like Cyprus and Ireland);
the United Kingdom;
As well as the European microstates of:
San Marino
Andorra
Monaco
Vatican City
*NOTE: Coverage varies slightly depending on your chosen plan — with our Essential and Annual plans extending coverage to the entire EU (including the UK and European microstates), and our Basic option focusing primarily on the Schengen Area and the European microstates.
What are the Schengen Travel Insurance requirements
In order to be eligible for a Schengen Visa, your Schengen Travel Insurance policy must meet the following requirements*:
Be purchased from an insurance company validated by the consular authorities of all Schengen countries
Have a minimum coverage of €30,000 in medical expenses (such as hospitalization, emergency treatment, and repatriation, including in case of death)
Cover you in all Schengen member countries (not just the one you plan to visit)
Be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen Area
*IMPORTANT NOTE: Your insurance plan should also be purchased before you apply for your Schengen visa — as proof of coverage is a mandatory part of the visa application process itself.
Our travel insurance protects you in all Schengen Area countries!
Germany, France, Spain, Italy… travel freely throughout Europe with unique and borderless coverage.
Whether you visit a single country or embark on a complete European tour, our insurance accompanies you everywhere, with the same quality of service and protection.
Does AXA also handle visa application processing with embassies?
AXA Schengen does not process visa applications. We provide the travel insurance document that is one of the requirements for your Schengen visa application. For the actual visa application process, you will need to contact the embassy or consulate of the Schengen country you plan to visit. For useful information about visa applications, you can consult our guide to obtaining a visa.
Will I receive the policy document for visa approval immediately after purchase?
Yes, you will receive your insurance certificate immediately after your payment is processed. The document will be sent to your email address and will also be available for download on your purchase confirmation page. This certificate contains all the information required by embassies for visa applications, including coverage amounts, policy dates and emergency contact information. Please check your spam/junk folder if you don't see it in your inbox within a few minutes of purchase.
What specific information does the embassy need to see on the insurance certificate?
Our insurance certificates display all information prominently, making them easily acceptable by all Schengen embassies. We format our certificates specifically to highlight these key requirements for consular officers.
Schengen embassies require that your insurance certificate clearly indicates:
Your full name and date of birth matching your passport
Coverage for the entire duration of your planned stay
Minimum coverage amount of €30,000 for medical expenses
Coverage for emergency medical treatments
Coverage for medical repatriation
Validity in all Schengen countries
Do your insurance policies cover all Schengen Area countries?
Yes, our Schengen insurance covers all Schengen Area countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Coverage is valid throughout the Schengen Area during your stay, regardless of the specific Schengen countries you plan to visit. The insurance meets the requirements for visa applications to any Schengen country.
Can I get a refund if my visa is refused?
Yes, we offer a full refund if your visa application is refused. Here is the simple process :

Additional comments
Attach a copy of the official visa refusal letter from the embassy/consulate. The document must contain the insured's name as well as a date and stamp from the embassy.
We will process your refund within 5 to 7 business days to your original payment method.
Additionally, with our Essential, Premium and Annual plans, you are also covered in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Cyprus. Please note that our Basic plan only covers the Schengen Area.
If you travel frequently, consider our Annual plan, which offers annual insurance for multiple trips per year. It's a great way to stay covered without having to buy insurance for each trip individually.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept the following payment methods:
Credit/debit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express
PayPal
iDeal (for Dutch customers)
Apple Pay
Google Pay
All these payment methods are secure and do not generate any additional fees.
Can I pay in my local currency instead of euros?
Our prices and payments are only in euros. But don't worry! When you pay with your credit card, your bank will convert the amount to your local currency at the current exchange rate.
Here are some points to remember:
Your bank might charge small foreign currency conversion fees (this is set by your bank, not by us)
Your credit card statement will display the equivalent amount in your local currency
The final price in your local currency depends on the exchange rate at the time of purchase
You can also select a secondary currency in the payment process to see an estimated rate. Just remember that the final price will always be processed in euros.
If you are concerned about the exchange rate, check with your bank their current euro conversion rate before making the purchase.
How can I see the price in my local currency?
Our website allows you to display prices in different currencies to help you understand the cost of your insurance:
In the top right corner of our site, you can select your preferred currency from several available options
Prices will then be displayed in this currency, with an indicative exchange rate
You will be able to see the converted amounts throughout the purchase process
Please note that this feature is for informational purposes only. Although prices are displayed in your local currency, the final payment will always be processed in euros. The actual exchange rate will be the one applied by your bank or payment provider at the time of the transaction.
