Hungary welcomes nearly 18 million international visitors annually, which is almost double its entire population. And it’s no wonder this European gem of beautiful contrasts has only been growing in popularity. World-renowned thermal baths and breathtaking Roman ruins. Scenic mountains, valleys, and waterfronts. Mouth-watering wines, goulash, and chimney cake. Cutting-edge architecture, vibrant historical squares and cafes, and Budapest's “ruin pubs” (google it)... In short, there’s something for every type of traveller to discover here!
If you too are hungry for a Hungarian adventure, you might be thinking about the right travel insurance. Especially if you need a Hungarian Schengen visa — travel insurance being a mandatory requirement and all. In which case, fear not! AXA has all you need to explore everything Hungary has to offer safely, legally, and worry-free below!

Is travel insurance mandatory for Hungary?
Whether your travel insurance for Hungary is mandatory or optional ultimately depends on whether you need a Schengen visa. And that’s because Hungary has been a member of the European Union since 2004 — and thereby the very closely related Schengen Zone since 2007.
This means that while Hungary does allow visa-free travel for its EU and Schengen neighbors, millions of its more international visitors require a Schengen visa to enter its borders. And to get a Schengen visa, it is indeed mandatory that you have the proper travel insurance.
Meanwhile, whether you need that Hungarian Schengen visa or not depends on your nationality, and where exactly you’re coming from.
Who doesn’t need a Schengen visa for Hungary (for stays of less than 90 days)?
So let’s break it down. You won’t need a Schengen visa for Hungary if you are:
- A citizen of one (or more) of the Schengen countries
- A holder of a valid residence permit issued by a Schengen Area member country
- A citizen of one (or more) of the non-Schengen European Union member countries
- A national of one (or more) of the non-EU countries and territories that have signed visa exemption agreements with the EU. The most popular among these are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, the U.K., and the U.S. (but there are over 60 nations total).
Who needs a Schengen visa for Hungary (for stays of less than 90 days)?
You will, however, need a Schengen visa to go to Hungary (and, thereby, the mandatory Schengen travel insurance) if you’re traveling on a passport from a country that has not signed a visa waiver agreement with the EU.
This generally applies to citizens of over a hundred nations worldwide — with China, India, and Russia being among the more popular ones (as well as any African nation, and most Middle Eastern ones).
PRO-TIPS: The European Commission is kind enough to provide full lists of the world’s countries both exempt and not exempt from the Schengen visa (as well as a ton of other helpful visa info).
Meanwhile, AXA can also help you answer the following in no time too:
IMPORTANT: Note that whether you need a Schengen visa or not, you can not stay in Hungary (and/or the rest of the Schengen) for more than three months in any 180-day period. After that, you’ll need more documentation (for example, a Type D aka “Long-Stay” or National visa).
PRO-TIP: Not sure what that means? No worries! AXA can help you wrap your head around the (often confusing) Schengen visa 90/180-day rule in no time too!
How do I apply for a visa for Hungary?
Turns out you do need that Hungarian Schengen visa? Well, luckily, you’re already halfway there too! Because all things Schengen pros AXA happen to have simple yet in-depth, step-by-step guides for all of the following too:
- How can I apply for a Schengen visa for Hungary?
- What type of Schengen visa should I choose?
- How much does a Schengen visa cost?
- How long does it take to process a Schengen visa?
So click around. Because if you’ve got a Schengen visa and/or travel insurance question — chances are AXA has the answer!
What are the travel insurance requirements to be granted a Schengen visa for Hungary?
And speaking of travel insurance. So, again, one of the primary (and mandatory) requirements for being granted a Schengen visa is that you have a proper travel insurance plan. And that’s whether you’re going to Hungary or anywhere else in the Schengen.
Moreover, according to the European Commission, to be granted your visa, your Schengen visa travel insurance plan needs to meet the following criteria:
- be purchased from an insurance company validated by the consular authorities of all Schengen countries
- have a minimum coverage of €30,000 in medical expenses (such as hospitalization, emergency treatment, and repatriation – including in case of death);
- cover you in Hungary and all the other Schengen member countries
- be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen Area
PRO-TIP: Fortunately, AXA’s plans meet all the EU criteria above!
But if you’d like, we can also gladly tell you more about travel insurance requirements for a Schengen visa (such as the reasons behind them, for example).
IMPORTANT: Oh, and keep in mind that you should already have a Schengen travel insurance plan in place (i.e., purchased) when applying for your Hungarian (or any other) Schengen visa!
I don’t need a Schengen Visa for Hungary. Do I still need travel insurance?
Legally speaking, no, not necessarily. Travel insurance is not mandatory if you don’t need a Schengen visa for Hungary. However, when traveling abroad, being properly insured is always a smart choice.
Medical expenses in Hungary can be higher than expected, especially for non-EU visitors. And especially for things like prescription drugs. Furthermore, no travel insurance means that if something goes wrong, you’ll have to cover hospital bills and/or emergency treatments yourself. Not to mention having to navigate a foreign healthcare system and all the red tape it entails.
PRO HEADS-UP: Oh, and if you happen to need medical repatriation, the costs from Europe — depending on your particular home and situation — can, unfortunately, easily reach tens of thousands of euros!
In short, European travel always comes with a few surprises. And that’s whether you’re enjoying the thermal baths of Budapest, wandering through the castles of Eger, hiking in the Buda Hills, or simply munching on some delicious goulash. So your health and safety - as well as those of your loved ones - should always come first. Having the right travel insurance, meanwhile, is one of the surest ways to ensure a smooth trip. Not only will it save you time, stress, and potentially a bunch of money. It will also ensure that, wherever you are in Hungary — from the banks of the Danube to the shores of Lake Balaton — you have reliable support and peace of mind 24/7.

What else should I know when preparing for my Hungary trip?
And just to make sure you’re good to go to Hungary, here are some final practical tips to keep in mind:
Security in Hungary
Hungary is a fairly safe country in general. However, like most Central European tourist destinations, low-level crime like bag snatching and pick-pocketing is not uncommon. Especially in places like central Budapest, on public transport, and around train stations and crowded markets. Theft of (and from) vehicles can be a thing too. And, in the ever-increasing digital age — online fraud as well.
In short, stay diligent, trust your gut, and avoid shady places and whatever feels like a scam. Don’t carry large amounts of cash, and keep your phone nearby and charged.
WPRO NIGHTLIFE TIP: There have also been some reported instances of drinks being spiked in bars and clubs in Hungary in recent years. So be sure to buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.
Currency in Hungary
IMPORTANT! Unlike most countries in the Schengen Area and the EU, Hungary's official currency is not the Euro but rather the Hungarian Forint (HUF).
Many stores and touristy places do accept Euros; however, you may not always get the most “honest” exchange rate.
PRO CASH TIP: Cards, meanwhile, are widely accepted - especially in the bigger cities. And for the latest regarding HUF exchange rates, check both the Hungarian National Bank and the European Central Bank websites.
Public transport in Hungary
Budapest has a comprehensive public transport system - including metro,* trams, and buses - all operated under BKK.
FUN FACT: Budapest Metro's M1 line (aka the Millenium Underground) is the first subway line in continental Europe — running strong all the way since 1896!
Most Hungarian cities and towns, meanwhile, are connected via reliable intercity MÁV trains. Buy tickets in advance (and/or download a few apps) to best plan your journeys.
PRO SAFETY TIP: Rail travel is usually safe, but do keep an eye on your belongings, especially on night trains and at crowded stations.
And, of course, major Hungarian cities - like most European major cities - offer scooter, e-bike, and Uber and Bolt options galore.
Driving in Hungary
To legally drive in Hungary, your home country’s license is valid if you’re from an EU nation or a party to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Otherwise, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).
PRO DRIVING TIPS:
- Hungary has a strict zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving.
- Dipped headlights must be used outside Hungarian cities even in daytime.
- And if your ride weighs less than 3.5 tons (which it probably does), you must also purchase an electronic vignette (aka e-matrica) before using motorways or some main roads.
Meanwhile, AXA can also tell you more about which driving licenses are accepted in Europe.
Opening hours in Hungary
Most stores open around 9:00 am and close between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, with reduced hours on weekends, especially in smaller towns.
Many shops and supermarkets are also closed on Sundays and national holidays. Budapest and other major tourist centers, of course, offer broader options - including international chains, late-night eateries, and so on.
Restaurants in Hungary
And, of course, Hungary offers a vibrant dining scene: cozy bistros, historic coffeehouses, countryside taverns, “ruin pubs,” wine cellars, and the usual “play-it-safe” touristy stuff too.
In major cities, restaurants typically open for lunch from noon and for dinner from about 6 pm, closing between 10 pm and midnight.
Most establishments will display card logos at the entrance - but have some cash (forint) for tips or small bills. Reservations are recommended in popular places- especially on weekends and holidays.
PRO TIPPING TIP: In Hungary, tipping is customary in restaurants, and locals typically leave 10–15% of the bill if the service was satisfactory. This is unless, of course, a service charge has already been added - which is increasingly common in Budapest and larger venues.
PRO FOOD TIP: Budapest’s central districts (V, VI, VII) have the greatest variety of international and fine-dining venues, while smaller towns feature more local and family-run eateries. And AXA recommend you try the following national favorites:
- Goulash (aka “Gulyás,” aka meat, potato, and paprika stew)
- Halászlé (spicy fish soup)
- Paprikás Csirke (chicken cooked in creamy paprika sauce)
FINAL TOURISM TIP: Hungary’s official tourism website Visit Hungary can tell you more about what to see and do in the “Heart of Europe.” And AXA, of course, can help you get there and back safe and sound (see above). So safe travels!

FAQ
Can I take out AXA Schengen travel health insurance for Hungary on behalf of someone else?
Yes! AXA allows you to easily purchase a plan for a friend, a colleague, a loved one, and/or any other visitors. You’ll only be asked to provide some personal info needed for their plan (such as their DOB, address, passport number, and itinerary).
What happens if I choose a travel insurance plan that doesn’t meet Schengen visa rules?
If your insurance plan doesn’t correspond with the EU criteria above, your visa application will be denied (and your visa fees, unfortunately, will not be refunded). PRO-REMINDER: AXA, meanwhile, does offer a full refund of your insurance premium - just so long as you provide an official explanation for the visa refusal from the respective embassy or consulate!
Can I visit the rest of Europe on a Hungarian visa?
You can visit most of it, yes. More specifically, your Hungarian Schengen visa will allow you to travel to Europe’s dozens of other Schengen countries. However, not all of Europe’s roughly 50 nations are in the Schengen Zone - and those that aren’t will, of course, have their own travel and visa requirements.
FINAL PRO-TIP: European geography can be tricky, which is why AXA can also tell you all about the key differences between Europe, the European Union, the EEA, and the Schengen Zone too!
