What is Schengen visa travel insurance (and why do I need it)?
Schengen travel insurance is specifically designed for travelers visiting one, any, or all of Europe’s Schengen countries. It’s also mandatory for anyone who needs a Schengen visa to do so.
Moreover, the travel insurance requirements to be granted a Schengen visa stipulate that your plan:
-be purchased from an insurance company validated by the consular authorities of all Schengen countries;
-have the minimum required Schengen travel insurance coverage of €30,000 in medical expenses (such as hospitalization, emergency treatment, and repatriation, including in case of death);
-cover you in all Schengen member countries;
-be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen Area;
AXA’s plans, of course, meet all the requirements above. But we’ll get to that.
PRO-TIP: Meanwhile, AXA can also tell you everything else you need to know about the documents required to apply for a Schengen Visa.
And if I don’t need a Schengen visa for Europe?
Well, visa or no visa, having the right Schengen travel insurance coverage is never a bad idea. First off, because traveling abroad always comes with a few surprises. And having travel health insurance — no matter the destination — is the first major step in ensuring your and your family’s well-being.
Moreover, one of the many benefits of AXA’s Schengen travel insurance plans is that they cover you not just in one European country — but, rather, throughout all the countries within the Schengen Zone (and sometimes beyond — but more on that below too).
So even if you don’t need a visa, Schengen travel insurance is still a great call for almost any European trip.
And yet another benefit of AXA that you simply can’t beat with other travel insurance plans? Well, the most bang for your buck, of course.
So without further ado — here’s a cost breakdown of the four plans we have to offer you and yours.
How much does AXA’s BASIC insurance cost?
Our first plan — AXA BASIC — starts at just €4,90 a day!
*MONEY-SAVING PRO-TIP: However, not only is BASIC our most affordable option, but the minimum €4.90/day rate actually starts to decrease — and quite drastically — with the more days you choose to stay in Europe!
Here are just a few quick and basic examples of how that works:
- 1 to 2 days: €4.90 per day
- 5 to 8 days: €22 (i.e., €4.40 € to €2.75 per day)
- 105 to 180 days: €189 (€1.80 to as little as €1.05 per day!)
Along with the most bang for your buck, with AXA BASIC, you get:
- Coverage in all the Schengen countries + the European microstates of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City
- Schengen visa application compliance
- A Full Refund if your Schengen visa is denied (in most cases)
- Coverage of up to 180 consecutive days (i.e., 6 months)
- Personal liability insurance
- Travel / Personal Accident coverage
- Medical teleconsultation in multiple languages (incl. English, French, Spanish, and more) with our “Doctor, Please!” feature
- Coverage of up to €30,000* in medical expenses and repatriation (incl. in case of death)
*”TOP-UP” PRO-TIP: And with AXA BASIC, you can also opt for “top-up coverage” — which allows you to increase your coverage to up to €50,000 for medical costs (and/or add luggage protection for just €9.90)!
In other words, AXA’s BASIC plan is the way to go if you’re looking for the most basic coverage, are traveling on a tighter budget — or both. And the longer you plan to stay in Europe, the lower the cost!
How much does AXA’s ESSENTIAL insurance cost?
AXA’s ESSENTIAL Travel Insurance, meanwhile, starts at €8.90/day* — offering greater benefits, even more protection, and not just in the Schengen zone (see below!).
*MONEY-SAVING PRO-TIP: Just like our BASIC option, with AXA ESSENTIAL, your rate also decreases the more days you choose to be covered. For example:
- 1 to 2 days: €8.90 per day
- 5 to 8 days: €33 (€6.60 - €4.2 per day)
- 105 to 180 days: €298 (€2.83 to as little as €1.65 per day)
AXA ESSENTIAL also:
- Covers you in all the Schengen countries and the European microstates of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City — as well as all European Union countries, and the United Kingdom (i.e., England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales)
- Meets the requirements for your Schengen visa application
- Is Refundable if your Schengen visa is denied (in most cases)
- Provides up to 180 consecutive days (i.e., 6 months)
- Offers Personal Liability insurance
- Guarantees Travel / Personal Accident coverage
- Offers Medical Teleconsultation with our “Doctor, Please!” feature (in multiple languages — incl. English)
And on top of all that, with ESSENTIAL, you get:
- covered costs for Search and Rescue operations
- coverage in the event of Theft or Loss of Identification Documents
- Family Assistance
- Repatriation and Assistance of Minors
- Support for Visiting Relatives in the event of a hospital stay
- Coverage of up to €50,000* in Medical Expenses and Repatriation (incl. in case of death)
*”TOP-UP” PRO-TIP: And just like with AXA BASIC, AXA ESSENTIAL also allows you to opt for “top-up coverage” — thereby increasing your medical expenses coverage ceiling all the way up to either €250,000 or €1 million (as well as offering bag protection for just €10.90)!
In short, AXA ESSENTIAL is the essential coverage for you if you’re planning a slightly more adventurous getaway, want to see more of Europe, and/or are traveling with family members or friends.
How much does AXA PREMIUM insurance cost?
And AXA’s latest addition — the all-inclusive, 100%-worry-proof AXA PREMIUM option — starts at 23.90 €/day.
But just like our ESSENTIAL and BASIC plans, the PREMIUM option also gets cheaper the longer you plan to travel!
For example:
- 1 to 2 days: €23.90 per day
- 5 to 8 days: €54.90 (€10.98 - €6.86 per day)
- 105 to 180 days: €439.90 (€4.19 - €2.44 per day)
Furthermore, along with providing all the countless benefits of our ESSENTIAL plan (see above!), AXA PREMIUM additionally offers:
- Coverage of up to €2 Million in medical expenses and repatriation (incl. in case of death)
- Luggage protection of up to €2,000
- Daily Hospital Allowance if necessary
- Emergency Dental Care coverage
In short, AXA PREMIUM is the way to go if you want the most comprehensive coverage possible for your European trip — i.e., premium peace of mind, 24/7 support, and maximum, all-inclusive, zero-worry protection no matter where you are (and no matter what life throws at you)!
How much does AXA’s ANNUAL insurance cost?
And, finally, with AXA ANNUAL— our most long-term coverage — just €349.90 effectively covers you for an entire year. In other words, less than a Euro a day!
That’s a single subscription to move freely — as many times as you want — and for all your stays in more than 30 European destinations (including the United Kingdom).
Ideal for professionals on the go, frequent travelers, and/or anyone holding or applying for a multi-entry Schengen visa, AXA ANNUAL offers:
- A full year of coverage for an unlimited number of trips (i.e., up to 90 consecutive days per trip*)
- Coverage in all Schengen area countries, all European Union countries, the European microstates, and the United Kingdom
- Schengen visa compliance (meeting all official EU requirements, as well as being accepted by all EU embassies and consulates worldwide)
- A full refund in case of Schengen visa refusal (in most cases)
- and coverage of up to €100,000, with the bonus option to “top up” your coverage to up to either €1 million or even €2 million (see below!)
*IMPORTANT PRO-TIP: Keep in mind though that once the 90-day maximum Schengen visa period ends, you’ll have to leave the Schengen area; however, your coverage will be reactivated as soon as you return.!
And with AXA ANNUAL, you also get:
- High reimbursement of medical expenses
- Repatriation support in the event of illness or death
- Free medical teleconsultation, in multiple languages, via our “Doctor Please!” feature
- Private liability insurance
- Travel/Personal Accident insurance (including for death/disability)
- Search and rescue costs
- Daily allowance in the event of hospitalization
- Family assistance (and/or assistance for the insured person traveling alone)
- Emergency dental care
- Baggage protection (against theft, loss, and/or damage)
- Delivery of items such as essential medicines, glasses, contact lenses, and prostheses
And, overall — solid, year-round protection against the unexpected…
*”TOP-UP” PRO-TIP: You can customize — i.e. with top up options — your AXA ANNUAL plan as well.
For example, you can opt to increase the medical coverage limit all the way up to €1 million or even €2 million,
and/or add even more comprehensive baggage insurance starting from €2.90 (and that includes compensation in the event of late delivery).
So ANNUAL is your best choice if you plan to travel to and/or throughout Europe regularly. Because even though its rate stays fixed, you won’t need to get a new plan each time you travel to the Schengen!
And at less than a Euro a day, it’s the perfect way to save on Schengen travel health insurance long-term!
Why choose AXA for my Schengen travel insurance?
And along with the best possible value for your budget, here are just a few more reasons why an AXA Schengen travel insurance plan is the way to go.

FAQ
Can I purchase Schengen travel health insurance for someone else?
Yes! AXA allows you to take out a travel insurance plan for guests and/or loved ones visiting you in Europe. You’ll just be asked to provide your visitor’s name, DOB, address, passport number, and itinerary — and they’re good to go!
Do I need to declare any pre-existing conditions when taking out Schengen travel insurance?
Yes. During the quote process, you’ll be asked a few quick (and confidential) questions — which will enable AXA to make an offer covering the conditions declared (IMPORTANT NOTE: Claims relating to undeclared conditions will not be covered).
Can I get my Schengen Visa online too?
No. While Schengen travel insurance can be easily purchased online, for the Schengen visa itself, you’ll still need to attend an in-person interview.
FINAL PRO-TIP: AXA has more about the EU’s long-standing plan to eventually bring the Schengen visa application process online too (as well as its fingers crossed!).
