The only compulsory condition of your travel insurance for Sweden is that it must cover emergency medical expenses and costs of repatriation, up to a minimum of 30,000 Euros. You can also select an option that ensures the certification of your documents by the embassies and consulates.

When choosing your travel insurance for Sweden, don’t hesitate to inform yourself about the many additional coverage options you may be able to take advantage of, in order to be perfectly protected: daily compensation in the event of hospitalisation; handling of communication expenses; delivery of vital medication, glasses, contact lenses and prostheses.

How to get to Sweden

By plane: many airlines such as SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Air France, Ryanair and Norwegian provide daily flights to Stockholm, as well as Göteborg. When travelling to the Swedish capital, most international flights land at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Notably, AirBaltic offers flights to Umeå and Luleå.

By ferry: you can take a ferry from Denmark or Germany. There are several guaranteed daily connections to Rødby, Varberg, Trelleborg and Göteborg, among others. Journeys can be quite long, but it is an excellent way of travelling without your car.

Advice on health and vaccinations

There are no compulsory vaccinations.

It is, however, recommended that you be vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus and polio, as well as tick-borne encephalitis if you are visiting rural areas in the spring or summer.

Don’t hesitate to consult your doctor if you have any doubts.

Weather

The proximity of the Gulf Stream enables Sweden to avoid large variations in temperature. The weather can be unpredictable, however, especially in the spring and summer. You are advised to plan for potential rainfall – even on fine days – and, of course, to take warm, waterproof clothing in winter, as the thermometer can drop very low, especially in the far north of the country.

Discover Sweden

You will probably begin your journey in Sweden by exploring the capital, Stockholm. A city of beautiful architecture, it also boasts many green spaces.

-Stockholm’s must-sees: admire the façades of the old town, as well as the town hall with its mosaic-covered walls. Check out the Royal Palace to immerse yourself in the world of Swedish Royalty. To find out more about the country’s culture, head to the Nordic and Vasa Museums.

-Göteburg is an ideal city for a stay on the border of nature and culture. This welcoming green city invites you to a visit spent both walking and relaxing.

-If you want to get your fill of nature, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Sweden. From Lake Siljan to the islands of Gotland and Öland, you will love finding yourself in the middle of ever-changing, contrasting landscapes. Abisko National Park will offer you abundant opportunities for picturesque hikes. It is also one of the locations favoured by Swedes for admiring the aurora borealis (northern lights).

-Admire the midnight sun: head to the north of the polar circle to see the sun in the middle of the night. This phenomenon is visible from spring until the middle to July.

-See the aurora borealis: in order to do so, you will have to travel to the far north during winter. The sky will also have to be relatively cloudless on the day. Distance yourself from the artificial light sources of the cities and aim for the period between February and April.

Safety

It is recommended that you remain vigilant with regards to the pickpockets present in cities and tourist areas, especially in stations, cafes, restaurants, and even hotels.

Practical information

If you hire a car, remember that it is compulsory to use dipped headlights, even during the day. The maximum blood-alcohol level is 0.2g/litre, and it is recommended that you remain very vigilant with regards to animals crossing the roads outside of the towns, including elk, deer, reindeer and more.

The Swedish currency is the Swedish Krona (crown). There are plenty of bureaux de change in the capital, as well as in the other cities. You can also withdraw money directly from ATMs with your bank card.

In general, shops are open from 9.30am to 6pm, closing early on Saturdays, at 4pm (sometimes even 2pm). Some large supermarket chains remain open until 10pm.

You won’t have any problem making yourself understood in English in Stockholm; likewise elsewhere in the country. Scandinavians learn to speak the language from a very young age.
